It’s here, and just in time for the holidays! The Cuir de Fleur scented candle, the latest creation from Carlotha Ray fragrances, will infuse your home with enchantment. If you’ve already fallen for one of our fragrances, you’ll recognize the house's olfactory signature: an accord blending osmanthus flowers, maté, oak moss and essence of juniper, inspired by vegetal leather – an allusion to our fashion creations and commitment to the planet.
In addition to its subtle fragrance, the Cuir de Fleur Carlotha Ray scented candle embodies French artisanal excellence, as it is made near the city of Nantes by a century-old wax-maker with the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" (Living Heritage Company) label. Our candle is also a truly decorative object, since its wax – 100% plant-based – sits in a tumbler made from Limoges porcelain, recognized the world over for its exceptional quality!
To mark the release of the Cuir de Fleur scented candle, we're going to discover the porcelain factory, which has also been awarded the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" label. We take you behind the scenes of the production of the Limoges porcelain tumbler to discover the secrets of its manufacture, where porcelain is treated like gold!
Step 1. Making the paste
Porcelain is made from quartz, feldspar and kaolin, which are mixed with water to create a liquid paste called “barbotine” (ceramic slip).
Stage 2. Molding
The carefully blended mixture is then poured into plaster molds, the walls of which are engraved with our famous palm motif in relief. The plaster absorbs the water, allowing the porcelain to set along the walls.
Stage 3. Unmolding/finishing
After unmolding, because there remain traces of paste and rough edges, the craftsman uses a sponge to clean each piece, a process known as "finishing".
Step 4. First firing
The ceramics are then carefully placed in a 900° gas kiln for a first firing. This stage, known in French as "dégourdi" firing, allows the shaped object to dry before being glazed. To preserve the magnificent natural look of Carlotha Ray’s porcelain tumbler, we omit the enameling stage.
Step 5. Second firing
Finally, to harden the porcelain, each piece is fired again in a gas kiln, this time at 1,380°. Our beautiful object is finally ready!
